Around 12 months old, Toby started walking. Here he is in our home at the time with my mum and dad in the background…

Here’s my dad sitting on the floor in our home while Toby plays with some cup mats. My dad picks up Toby’s beloved Fred puppet, and encourages Toby to do the ‘more’ American Sign Language sign: pushing 2 fists together (which Catherine and I learned from a book (and accompanying video) that had recently become popular called Sign With Your Baby by W. Joseph Garcia which has now sold more than one million copies – we wanted to help Toby communicate with us easily before he learned how to talk…

In this video Toby uses the sign to eat: 3 fingers to his mouth. Catherine sits Toby on her knee and feeds him some peach. You’ll see Toby use the sign for ‘more’ several times…

Catherine’s mother Barbara (Nonny) plays with Toby in our garden…

Catherine’s mother’s mother, Great Granny, is in this video. She died a few years ago. You’ll also see Catherine’s father, John in this clip too…
